Resting — God’s Gift to Mankind

Our culture is moving at a break-neck pace! Companies scramble to get more done with fewer people. Households scatter to get kids to and from school, soccer and other sports, music and dance lessons, and a host of other activities. It seems like we’re being pulled from every direction. When will we be able to rest and relax?

We know we need to slow down. We know we need to rest. But it’s almost as though we’ve come to think of rest as something for the weak. Yet, resting is a spiritual discipline–a following skill–designed to refresh us and help us grow in our relationship with Christ.

Of all the spiritual disciplines available to us, this one may very well be the most difficult and most urgently needed. Discover how you can rest and how this skill can launch you into deeper relationship with Christ.

28:19–The Skills for Disciple-Making

front only for Dad's purposes

28:19 – The Skills for Disciple-Making are simple, biblical, relational skills for leading oneself and others into deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

“28:19 is the purest, most relational discipleship tool I have ever encountered. Interacting with the resurrected Jesus, helping others to relate with our gracious God, and challenging others toward Christ is the essence of 28:19. These are tools that Rob has used for years and I have had the privilege of watching his life.” – Brad Pesnell, Community Pastor, Valley Real Life

The companion 28:19 Participant Manual is designed for use with large or small groups and puts feet to this book. It places us in situations for life-on-life discipleship and helps us integrate The Skills for Disciple-Making into everyday life.

28:19–The Skills for Disciple-Making Participant Manual

Front 28.19 Manual

Discipleship has two aspects to it. One aspect involves our resolve to actively pursue Jesus Christ in an ever-deepening relationship with Him. And as we draw near to Him, He transforms us, making us more like Him.

The other aspect of discipleship flows out of our ever-growing relationship with Christ. Namely, we model before others what it means to follow Jesus and live for Him. And we coach and challenge them to pursue Him as we do.

That’s what this 28:19 Participant Manual is all about. In this manual and its companion book: 28:19—The Skills for Disciple-Making you will learn some very simple, biblical, relational skills for pursuing Jesus Christ and leading others into deeper relationship with Him.

This isn’t a “study,” but a practical guide for following Jesus and showing others how to follow Him as well. Because of the relational nature of discipleship, you will want to use this manual in the context of other followers of Jesus.

Drazenovich — An Alaskan Adventure

Front of book

Late fall, 2001, Paul Claus, bush pilot and owner of Ultima Thule Lodge in the wilds of Alaska, dropped Tom off at a remote cabin in the wilderness for the winter. When Paul returned in late March, 2002 to pick up Tom, the young trapper was acting very strange and refused to speak.

After flying Tom out of the wilderness and dropping him off in Chitina, Paul returned to his remote cabin to determine the cause of Tom’s odd behavior. Back at the cabin, Paul discovered Tom’s journal tucked under the mattress on the bunk.

Paul, not realizing what he held, flopped open the book and began reading. Over a period of some days, Tom had written about repeated meetings and conversations with another trapper named Paul who allegedly had a camp two miles upriver from the cabin.

Paul Claus was stymied. He knew of no camp upriver from his remote cabin and he definitely knew that he had not been here on the dates indicated by Tom. Tom’s journal entries seemed weird—crazy!

The next day, Paul and his son Jay decided to fly upriver to look for this camp of which Tom wrote. After a flyover and combing the ground on foot, they found the camp alright, or rather its ruins. For nearby they discovered the signature of its owner carved in a tree: “Paul Drazenovich 1918.”
Reality meets fiction as the author unfolds the tale of Paul Drazenovich and the harrowing adventures that brought him to Alaska and into the near inaccessible reaches of the rugged Wrangle Mountains so long ago.

Solitude — Spending Time Alone with God

Solitude Cover

Jesus Christ provides us with the model for practicing solitude. Of Jesus, Luke writes, “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” (Luke 5:16)

Here’s a simple definition of solitude: getting alone with God in the absence of noise and distraction.

Solitude is getting alone with God. Solitude is not simply getting alone. It’s getting alone with God. In solitude, we go out to spend time with God alone. Solitude is neither loneliness, nor the hermit lifestyle of isolation. Solitude only has meaning in the context of relationships. The deeper any relationship, the greater our need is for alone time with that person.

If you’re married, think back on the days when you were wooing your wife-to-be. Remember all the time you spent alone with her? When you were dating the woman you married, you had a lot to talk about. No doubt you held hands strolling through a park or on a beach simply enjoying each other’s company—alone. You continually sought time to spend with each other alone.

In a healthy marriage, we want to continue spending time alone with each other. Also, as a dad we need to spend time alone with each of our children. We can have meaningful conversations and establish a depth of relationship in those alone times that is not possible with others present.

This same principle holds true in our relationship with God. We need solitude or alone time with God in order to deepen our relationship with him. I would go so far as to say that without solitude with God our relationship with him will remain superficial. We will never know him to the extent that he wants us to.

On Alert! — Staying Vigilant through Prayer

On Alert Book cover

Communication is one of the most strategic factors on the battlefield. Open communication lines are vital for coordination and execution of the mission. If the enemy can intercept or disrupt our communications, our mission is at risk.

Prayer is our communication link with God. Is it any wonder that the evil one would like nothing better than to disrupt our communications with God? If our communication with the Father is interrupted, our relationship is jeopardized.

Jesus Christ has put us on alert until He returns. Jesus urges us to “be on the alert,” “keep watch,” and “be ready.” One of the primary ways we maintain our vigilance is through prayer—constant communication—with Him. Paul urged us to “Be alert and always keep on praying….” (Ephesians 6:18)

On Alert! helps us hone our skills in praying in order to experience an ever deepening relationship with Jesus Christ. “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Colossians 4:2)

Fully Equipped — God’s Word: One of the Essentials for Survival

Some years ago, a friend of mine, who knew better, took off on a back-country hike in Alaska without the essentials for survival. His intention was to put the 26-mile trek behind him within a few hours. But a storm blew in that afternoon bringing cold and rain. He wasn’t prepared for this and soon began to show signs of hypothermia.

In his delirium, he lost the trail and headed up a rogue trail into another valley. Darkness set in and he spent the night wandering aimlessly in Grizzly infested country trying to keep warm.

By the next morning, his friends realized that he hadn’t returned. They quickly assembled two search and rescue teams, each starting at opposite ends of the trail. Shortly before noon they found my friend confused, hypothermic, and dehydrated. Without their assistance he may not have made it out alive.

Like my friend, many of us attempt to trek through life without the essentials for survival. For followers of Christ, God’s Word is one of those essentials.

Fully Equipped shows us how to integrate God’s Word into our lives in practical ways, assuring that we are prepared for all that life throws at us. To order please click here.

Comrades in Arms–The Power of Pursuing Christ in the Company of Other Men

As followers of Christ, God has ordained that we should each team up with other men around us. In warfare, the one who goes off by himself and leaves his unit is AWOL. He’s a deserter. The victors team up together. They stand and fight together. They care for and support one another. Comrades in Arms challenges men to pursue Christ in the company of other men and provides practical tools for initiating and sustaining such camaraderie.

Becoming Tarzan

Rob Fischer writes, “Having grown up in a semi-rural suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, I never viewed my childhood as unique or out-of-the-ordinary. But my wife—raised in Chicago—assures me otherwise. Largely because of her laughter and amazement over my childhood escapades and because of her prompting to do so, I’ve agreed to preserve these stories in Becoming Tarzan. I hope you find as much enjoyment in reading them as I did living them!”

If you’re a Baby Boomer, you’ll no doubt relate well with the author’s fancifully true anecdotes from the 50s and 60s. If you were born sometime after that period, you’ll love his stories, wishing that you too had experienced that less encumbered era. But no matter who you are, you’ll find yourself feeling good, amused, perhaps aghast, and sometimes laughing aloud at Rob’s whimsical story-telling style.
