Growing Old Like Caleb

I turned 65 this year. There are a couple of different ways to take that statement (which is true, by the way).

First, there are a lot of younger people who would think, “Wow! That’s old!” Some of those people might tend to write someone off as being feeble, senile, forgetful, fuddy-duddy, or something else useless.

Others more my contemporary might say with a sense of futility, “Sixty-five, huh? Welcome to the club. Now you can retire, live on a fixed income, take lots of medications, and sit around swapping stories about what ails you.” They see growing old as an inevitable bummer of life.

I’ve begun to realize that a lot of older people become nearly invisible. They no longer matter. They’re not the building blocks of a church, a business, or even a family. They’re consigned to a soft chair in the corner.

I have other plans for growing old when I do. I want to grow old like Caleb. Only Caleb and Joshua had a vision and faith for what God wanted Israel to do: go in and take the land of Canaan. Sadly, because they were in the minority, their votes didn’t count. And so, along with the entire vast company of Israel, Caleb and Joshua had to wander in the wilderness for 40 years—because of someone else’s sin.

But they apparently didn’t let that “minor” (40 years) setback change their view of God or of themselves. Here’s Caleb’s testimony at the age of 85:

Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said. – Joshua 14:10-12

God did this because Caleb followed the Lord wholeheartedly (Numbers 32:12; Deuteronomy 1:36; Joshua 14:8). Also, Caleb’s words and claims were not those of a doting old man. He followed through with what he said he’d do and was successful (Judges 1:20). That’s why I want to grow old like Caleb.

Proud to Be a Vet!

Rob militaryFrom 1972 to 1975 I had the privilege of serving in the United States Army. I had not planned to serve in the military, but when I received my draft notice I had no regrets or hesitation. I counted it an honor to serve my country.

Since I was going into the Army anyway, I decided to enlist for a third year. The Army trained me as a German linguist and stationed me in Berlin for two years. Berlin was still an occupied city 200 km behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany at the time.

While in Berlin, on two separate occasions, German men saw me in uniform, approached me and warmly shook my hand thanking me for being there to help protect them from the threat of Russia. Those men, who had lived through WW2, were extremely grateful to the US and for our presence. Never have I been more proud to be an American!

As is often the case, my military training in German became very useful back in civilian life. And some years later, my wife and I headed to Austria to serve as missionaries. In Austria, time and time again, the WW2 generation expressed their gratitude to me as an American for what our country had done for them.

One Austrian man told me with tears in his eyes that he, his mom and brother would not be alive today had it not been for the Americans who fed and clothed them following the war. He said the first time he ever tasted chocolate was as a gift from a US soldier.

An Austrian woman reflected on the post-war days with fondness for the generous and respectable way that Americans treated her and her family. She added that other nations were raping and pillaging, while the American GIs protected, fed and cared for them. Again, my chest swelled with pride to be an American!

As we celebrate another Veteran’s Day, remember the values and Christian character that have guided us as a nation and as men and women in the Armed Services. We have a strong moral heritage to live up to as we represent our great country throughout the world. May we continually seek God and His favor. God, please bless America!

There are numerous benefits of a healthy existence. But can medicines help us? So it’s no wonder that online pharmacies have grown in stock over the last years. For instance Xylocaine causes loss of feeling in an area of your body. Given before dental work. Furthermore treats emergency core problems. Sometimes drugstores offer to them customers Levitra. Typically, this may include diabetes, doldrums, or a venous leak. Causes of sexual dysfunction include psychological matters, such as doldrums. Chronic illness, several medicaments, and a condition called Peyronie’s disease can also cause erectile dysfunction. Along with them good effects, most medications, nevertheless, have objectionable side effects although commonly not everyone experiences them. Very likely the physician will take into account possible remedy interactions with Levitra, your age and any previous experience you have had with the drug.

Comrades in Arms

Men, here we are again nearing the end of one year and entering a new one. I don’t know about you, but each New Year I try to take stock of my life and where I’m headed. In view of this, which of these statements apply to you?

  • My relationship in Christ seems stale and I want to rekindle my vision for fullness of life in Him.
  • I’m stuck in a sinful or destructive practice and I want to break free.
  • I haven’t been in the Word and praying lately, but I want to solidify these disciplines in my life.
  • My relationship with my wife isn’t what it should be, but I want to love her well.
  • My relationship with my children has deteriorated and I want to rebuild their trust and love.
  • In the New Year I want to renew my focus to courageously follow Jesus Christ.

Perhaps you own one or more of these statements or could add other similar ones. Allow me to share with you what I believe to be the most direct and effective way to live a victorious life in Christ. Whether we are currently struggling not, we all need a comrade in arms.

Most men see themselves as loners. If you find yourself chronically struggling with the same old challenges in your walk with Christ, it’s probably because you’re trying to go it alone. Somewhere along the line we have bought into the deception that we can (should) live the Christian life alone. We think we need to do life and follow Christ on our own and that to team up with a comrade in arms would somehow be a show of weakness—a crutch.

Men, that’s the wrong metaphor! Teaming up with a comrade in arms to follow Christ is no more a crutch than it is for a quarterback to team up with his receiver. We should not attempt alone what Christ meant for us to accomplish in the company of others.

What is a comrades-in-arms partnership? This is a spiritual partnership between two or more men in which they propel each other forward into deeper relationship with Christ. Do you want to move forward in your relationship with Christ? I know of no more effective way to do that than through spiritual partnership. Here are five characteristics of a comrades-in-arms relationship:

Five Characteristics of Spiritual Partnership

  1. Gender-specific. Comrades in arms are men with men and women with women pursuing relationship with Christ. We adhere to this characteristic for the sake of effectiveness and propriety. If you’re married, your wife should be your spiritual partner as well, but men need other men. Look at Jesus’ example with His disciples.
  2. Spend time together in real life. If my comrade in arms only sees me in the context of church or a coffee shop, he won’t see how I interact with my wife and family, or in traffic, or at play. Note how Jesus spent time with His disciples in real life.
  3. Love and care for each other. A comrade-in-arms relationship is mutual and reciprocal. We’ve got each other’s back and we’re there for each other through thick and thin.
  4. Challenge each other boldly from God’s Word. We grant each other permission to ask “tough” questions and we deliberately spur one another on to deeper relationship with Christ. Growth in Christ is not accidental. His call on our lives is still active and relevant: “Follow Me!”
  5. Pray with and for each other. We lead each other into the presence of God through prayer and call on Him to transform us. There is something very powerful when two or more men agree in prayer, calling on the name of Almighty God!

Examples of some “Tough Questions”

  • “What is God doing in your life right now?”
  • “What is God showing you from his Word?”
  • “What one thing in your life is preventing you from enjoying God fully?”
  • “In what ways are you currently leading your wife and family closer to the Lord?”
  • “How well are you loving your wife right now?”
  • “What are your greatest joys/challenges in walking with Jesus right now?”
  • “What’s one thing you’d like to see Christ change in you?”
  • “In what ways is God using you to model Christlikeness to others?”

Let me boldly challenge you with this verse: “And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God.” 1 Samuel 23:16 Who is your Jonathan? Who is your comrade in arms? Don’t go into the New Year without one!

Excerpt from book:

Amos was a prophet whom God sent to the ten northern tribes of Israel. The people of Israel had spurned God’s Word and gone their own way. Time and time again God had pleaded with them to repent and turn from their wicked ways, but they wouldn’t listen. Finally, God gave them this message through the prophet Amos:

’The days are coming,’ declares the Sovereign Lord, ‘when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.’ (Amos 8:11)

Men, there is a famine in our land and in the lives of many of us for the Word of God. This is a self-imposed famine—a spiritual anorexia—in which we refuse to consume a steady, nourishing diet of the Word of God. And we are slowly deteriorating.

Whereas God invites us to feast on His Word, we nibble on it. We take a bite here and there. But we rarely linger at the table with God’s Word to come away satisfied and full of God’s grace and goodness. But God invites us:

Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. (Isaiah 55:1-2)

Comrades in Arms

I’m excited to announce the publication of my new book, Comrades in Arms—The Power of Pursuing Christ in the Company of Other Men.

A comrades-in-arms or spiritual partnership is one of the most powerful, yet most neglected means for deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. Proverbs 27:17 instructs us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” (NIV)

All through Scripture, we see the examples of spiritual partnerships between men like David and Jonathan, Jesus and His disciples, Paul and Barnabas, Paul and Silas, and Paul and Timothy. Especially from the pattern of Jesus and the apostles we recognize that God did not intend for us to follow Christ alone. We not only experience huge gains in pursuing Christ and His character with others of His followers, we also recognize that apart from such spiritual partnerships we cannot grow into all that Christ desires for us.

Perhaps some are skeptical of the claim that spiritual partnerships are necessary for growth in Christ. But don’t take my word for it! The Scriptures explain that an ever deepening relationship with Christ is God’s design and will for us as His followers. God’s Word also reveals that this growth in Christ resulting in a transformed life is a “team sport”, not achievable on our own and with great gains for all engaged.

Paul explains that by ourselves we are in danger of remaining like “infants” in our walk with Christ. “Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:15-16 NIV)

Maybe you’re thinking, “Great, here’s one more thing I’m supposed to do!” On the contrary, when we recognize the huge gains that God gives us in spiritual partnerships to grow more quickly and fully in Him, we gladly seek out such relationships. We do this both for our benefit and for that of others. “Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 NLT)

Over the past eleven years, spiritual partnerships have impacted my life in Christ significantly. When we combine God’s Word and prayer with spiritual partnerships, God’s Spirit leverages His Word and prayer in profound ways in our lives! “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.” (Colossians 3:16 ESV) And, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16 NIV) Why wouldn’t we want to team up with another follower of Christ for this kind of impact?!

The book, Comrades in Arms, focuses specifically on spiritual partnerships for men. In the book you will discover:

  • Five reasons why spiritual partnerships are vital for our spiritual transformation!
  • The causes of our neglect of spiritual partnerships and how to beat them!
  • Five winning characteristics of spiritual partnerships!
  • How to boldly challenge each other from God’s Word!
  • Numerous practical examples for conducting spiritual partnerships!
  • Four simple steps to launch your own spiritual partnership!

Additionally, each chapter concludes with questions that promote thoughtful discussion to stimulate growth in a spiritual partnership or a small group setting.

Also, I’m excited to announce that I’ll be launching my book at the Iron Sharpens Iron Men’s Conference here in Spokane on Saturday, April 20th. Then on Saturday, May 4th, I will be presenting a Comrades in Arms workshop at the same conference in Boise, ID. Please pray for these men’s conferences and for the men who will attend. May the Lord perform His life-changing work in their lives!

A Bold Request!

I believe that God will use this book in a powerful way in the lives of countless men and the families they represent and influence. But I’ve got to get the book into the hands of men. Would you please help me in the following ways:
